# What Golf Coaches Actually Look For in Your Swing

Ever wonder what your coach is really analyzing? From setup fundamentals to impact position, here's what trained eyes focus on — and why it matters for your game.

## It's Not What You Think

Most golfers assume their coach is watching the club. The backswing position, the lag angle, the follow-through. And yes, we see those things. But the best coaches are looking at something deeper — the patterns that create those positions in the first place.

When I evaluate a swing, I'm reading a story. The grip tells me about control. The stance tells me about balance. The transition tells me about timing and sequencing. The ball flight confirms or challenges everything I just observed.

## The Setup: Where 80% of Errors Begin

Before the club even moves, I can often predict the ball flight. Here's what I'm scanning:

- **Grip** — Is the pressure even? Are the hands working together or fighting each other? A grip that's too strong or too weak will force compensations throughout the entire swing.
- **Stance and Alignment** — Feet, hips, and shoulders should tell a consistent story. When they don't, the body has to manufacture corrections mid-swing.
- **Posture** — Spine angle, knee flex, distance from the ball. These set the foundation for the swing arc. Poor posture is the most common and most fixable issue I see.
- **Ball Position** — Too far forward, too far back, or inconsistent from shot to shot. Small changes here create massive differences in contact and trajectory.

## The Backswing: Sequence Over Position

I'm less interested in where the club is at the top and more interested in how it got there. Did the takeaway start with the hands, the arms, or the body? Did the weight shift appropriately? Is there tension building in the wrong places?

A technically "perfect" backswing position that was achieved through compensation is worse than an unorthodox position arrived at naturally. Sequence matters more than checkpoints.

## Impact: The Moment of Truth

Impact is where the data lives. Club path, face angle, dynamic loft, low point — these four factors determine ball flight. Everything in the swing either supports or undermines what happens in this quarter-second window.

When I use launch monitor data alongside video, I can see exactly what happened at impact and trace it backward to find the root cause. The symptom might be a slice, but the cause could be grip, alignment, transition, or all three.

## What We Do With the Information

This is where coaching philosophy matters. Some coaches see five things wrong and try to fix all five. We prioritize. What is the _one_ change that will create the biggest improvement? We start there, build confidence, and layer in adjustments over time.

Your Student Dashboard tracks this progression. Each phase of your development focuses on specific fundamentals, and the training videos and drills align with what your coach identified in your evaluation. Nothing is random.
