# A Parent's Complete Guide to Getting Your Child Into Golf

Thinking about introducing your kid to golf? Here's everything you need to know — from the right age to start, finding the right coach, and what to expect in those first few months.

## The Question Every Golf Parent Asks

I get this call at least twice a week: "Coach Francis, my kid wants to try golf — where do we even start?" It's a great question, and the answer matters more than most parents realize. The first experience your child has with this game will shape how they feel about it for years.

I've watched kids fall in love with golf at age five. I've also watched teenagers burn out because someone pushed too hard, too early. The difference almost always comes down to how they were introduced — and that's something you can control.

## When Should a Child Start Golf?

There's no magic age, but there are developmental milestones that matter.

### Ages 3-5: Introduction Through Play

At this age, golf should look like recess. Plastic clubs, foam balls, putting into a cup in the backyard. The goal isn't technique — it's fun. If your child can swing a stick and laugh while doing it, they're ready for exposure. We run clinics for this age group that are 80% games and 20% golf. That ratio is intentional.

### Ages 6-8: Structured Play

This is where group lessons start to make sense. Kids can follow basic instructions, understand the concept of a target, and begin developing hand-eye coordination that translates to the golf swing. Our junior programs at BGP introduce fundamental grip, posture, and aim in a way that feels like a game, not a lecture.

### Ages 9-12: Skill Building

Now we can start building real technique. Kids in this range have the attention span and physical coordination to work on their swing, short game, and putting with purpose. This is also the age where many juniors start playing on the course — not just the range.

### Ages 13+: Competitive Development

For teenagers serious about golf, this is when structured coaching, fitness training, and tournament play come together. But it's critical that the foundation was built correctly in the earlier years.

## What Parents Should Know Before the First Lesson

### You Don't Need Expensive Equipment

A starter set with 5-7 clubs is all your child needs. Don't spend $500 on custom-fit junior clubs before they've taken a lesson. We can advise on the right set once we see your child's size and swing. Many of our students start with hand-me-downs or affordable starter sets.

### Find a Coach Who Specializes in Juniors

Not every golf instructor is a good junior golf instructor. Working with kids requires patience, creativity, and an understanding of youth development. At BGP, our coaches are trained to adapt to each child's attention span, learning style, and emotional needs. We don't teach kids the same way we teach adults.

### Manage Your Own Expectations

This is the biggest one. Your child's first few months of golf will include topped balls, whiffed shots, and frustration. That's normal. The parents who make this work are the ones who celebrate effort over results. Don't keep score for the first year.

## The Three Things That Make Junior Golf Work

### 1\. A Positive Environment

Kids need to feel safe to fail. Our junior programs are designed to be encouraging and energetic. We celebrate small wins — a good grip, a ball that gets airborne, a putt that rolls on line.

### 2\. Age-Appropriate Instruction

We don't teach a seven-year-old the same way we teach a fifteen-year-old. Younger kids learn through games, challenges, and competitions. Older juniors respond to video analysis, data, and goal-setting.

### 3\. Family Involvement

The best junior golf experiences happen when the family is involved. Play with your child. Walk the course with them. Show interest in what they're learning. Golf is one of the few sports where parents and kids can play together for a lifetime.

## What to Expect in the First Three Months

- **Month 1:** Exposure, fundamentals, and fun. Your child will learn grip, stance, and how to make contact. Most of the time will be spent on short game and putting — where success comes fastest.
- **Month 2:** Building confidence. Range sessions get longer, and your child starts hitting more consistent shots. We introduce basic course concepts like aim and club selection.
- **Month 3:** Playing on the course. Whether it's a par-3 course or playing a few holes at a local track, getting on the course is where the magic happens.

## The Austin Advantage

Central Texas is one of the best places in the country to develop a junior golfer. We have year-round playing weather, dozens of courses within driving distance, and a growing junior golf community. At BGP, our junior programs feed directly into competitive golf when the time is right, and we have the coaching staff to support every stage of development.
