# How to Get Your Junior Golfer on the High School Team in Texas

Making the high school golf team in Texas is competitive. Here's what coaches look for, how to prepare, and the timeline your family should follow.

## The Reality of High School Golf in Texas

Texas takes high school golf seriously. UIL golf is one of the most competitive circuits in the country. Making the team — especially at 5A and 6A schools in Austin — is not guaranteed. But with early preparation and a structured plan, it's absolutely achievable.

## What High School Coaches Look For

### 1\. Scoring Ability

For most Austin-area 6A schools, you'll need mid-to-low 80s for varsity. At powerhouse programs like Westlake, you might need mid-70s.

### 2\. Course Management

Smart play beats long drives. Coaches notice the player who avoids big numbers over the one who makes birdies and triples.

### 3\. Consistency

One good round doesn't make the team. Coaches look at trends across multiple qualifying rounds and conditions.

### 4\. Attitude and Coachability

Positive teammates who handle adversity well and are open to feedback always have an edge.

### 5\. Rules Knowledge

UIL follows USGA rules strictly. Your junior needs to know them cold.

## The Preparation Timeline

### 7th-8th Grade: Build the Foundation

- Play 2-3 rounds per month on full courses
- Weekly coaching focused on fundamentals
- Track every score
- Play local tournaments (TJGT, PGA Junior League)
- Start TPI screening and fitness

### Summer Before Freshman Year: Intensify

- 3-4 rounds per week
- Structured practice: 50% short game, 30% full swing, 20% games
- Simulate qualifying: no mulligans, strict rules
- Build stamina for Texas heat

### Fall of Freshman Year: Execute

- Introduce yourself to the coach early
- Warm up properly — show preparation
- Play smart, not aggressive during qualifying
- Stay composed after bad shots
- Know the rules

## What If You Don't Make It?

Not making it freshman year is common. Ask the coach for specific feedback, play JV if available, continue tournament play, and double down on coaching. Many of my students didn't make varsity until sophomore or junior year.

## How BGP Prepares Juniors

- Qualifying round simulations under pressure
- On-course strategic decision-making coaching
- Data-driven score tracking and goal setting
- TPI training for stamina and injury prevention
- Mental game readiness for tryout performance

If your junior is in 7th or 8th grade, now is the time. Book a junior assessment at BGP.
