# From Slice to Draw in One Lesson: A Left-Handed Transformation

Watch a real student go from a nasty slice to a controlled draw in a single 30-minute lesson. Coach Francis walks through the exact grip, path, and face corrections in real time.

## The Slice: Golf's Most Common Enemy

Every golfer has been there. You step up to the tee, make what feels like a good swing, and watch the ball curve violently away from your target. For left-handed golfers, that means a hard curve to the right — a slice that bleeds distance, kills accuracy, and destroys confidence.

In this 30-minute lesson, I worked with a real left-handed student who came to BGP with one goal: fix the slice. What happened next is something I genuinely love about coaching — when the diagnosis is clear, the fix can happen faster than anyone expects.

## The Diagnosis

Before we touched anything, I started with data. Using our Foresight Sports launch monitor, we captured his baseline numbers. Club path was 8° out-to-in — way too steep. Face angle was 3° open to the path. Spin axis was at +14°, which translates to heavy left-to-right spin for a lefty. And his carry distance was 185 yards — which should have been 220 or more based on his club speed.

The numbers told the whole story. The club was cutting across the ball from outside-to-inside with the face wide open to the path. That's the recipe for a slice, and it was costing this student 35+ yards of carry.

## The Grip Fix

The first thing I changed was the grip. His trail hand — the left hand for lefties — was rotated too far on top of the club. A "weak" grip that made it nearly impossible to square the face at impact.

The correction was subtle but powerful. I rotated the trail hand slightly under the grip until two knuckles were visible, made sure the "V" pointed toward the left shoulder, and softened his grip pressure from what felt like a death grip down to about a five out of ten. This single change didn't fix the slice entirely, but it gave him the ability to square the face. Without it, nothing else would have mattered.

## The Path Correction

With the grip sorted, we moved to the swing path. He was coming over the top — a move where the club starts the downswing by moving outward toward the ball instead of dropping down and inside.

I set up what I call the Headcover Drill. You place a headcover just outside the ball, about six inches away. If you come over the top, you hit it. If you drop the club inside, you miss it. He hit the headcover three times before the motor pattern started to click. By the fifth swing, the path had already improved from 8° out-to-in to just 2°. I could see his eyes light up.

## The Body Rotation

The final piece was getting his body to support the new path. He was spinning his upper body too early in the downswing, which pulled the club outside every time.

I introduced what I call the "Bump and Turn" sequence. Start the downswing with a slight lateral bump of the trail hip toward the target. Then rotate the body through. The key feeling is that the arms drop before the shoulders open. This sequence creates the space for the club to approach from the inside. Without it, the arms have nowhere to go but over the top.

## The Result

By the end of 30 minutes, the numbers had completely changed. Club path went to 2° in-to-out — a 10° improvement. Face angle was 1° closed to the path. Spin axis flipped to -4°, a slight draw spin. And carry distance jumped to 218 yards — 33 yards longer than where we started.

He went from a 185-yard slice to a 218-yard draw in a single session. Not by overhauling the entire swing, but by making three precise, connected changes: grip, path, and sequence.

## Why This Matters for Your Game

The slice isn't a life sentence. It's a pattern — and patterns can be changed. But they can only be changed when you understand the cause, not just the symptom.

Most golfers try to fix a slice by aiming further left or swinging harder. Both make it worse. The fix is almost always mechanical: grip, path, and body sequence. Get those three right, and the ball has to draw. It's physics.

The bigger lesson here is that meaningful change doesn't always require months of grinding. Sometimes it takes the right diagnosis, three precise adjustments, and the willingness to trust the process. That's what coaching is.
