Here's what the path actually looks like. ## The Skill Benchmarks Before you consider turning pro, you need to honestly assess where your game stands against these benchmarks: ### Scoring - **Minimum:** Consistently shooting in the mid-to-low 60s on tournament-length courses under competitive conditions - **Scoring average:** A competitive mini-tour player averages 68-70. PGA Tour players average around 70 on much harder courses with much more pressure. - **Competitive results:** Multiple wins or top-5 finishes in elite amateur events (state amateurs, USGA qualifiers, strong regional events) ### Driving - **Clubhead speed:** 110+ mph with driver - **Average driving distance:** 285+ yards carry - **Accuracy:** Finding fairways 60%+ of the time at that distance ### Approach Play - **Greens in regulation:** 65%+ in competition - **Proximity:** Inside 30 feet from 150-200 yards consistently ### Short Game - **Scrambling:** 60%+ conversion rate - **Putting:** Making 50%+ from inside 8 feet under pressure ### Mental Game - **Bounce-back ability:** Birdie rate after bogey should be 25%+ - **Closing ability:** Can you shoot a low final round when you're in contention? - **Consistency across rounds:** No blowup rounds (77+ on a day when contending) If you're not hitting these benchmarks in amateur competition, you're not ready to turn pro.
