# How to Break 100 in Golf: The Austin Golfer's Practical Guide

Breaking 100 is the first real milestone in golf. Here's the no-nonsense game plan our coaches use to get students there — focused on the shots that actually matter.

## The First Real Milestone

Breaking 100 is when golf starts to feel like _your_ sport. You're not just surviving holes anymore — you're playing them. Most golfers who take regular lessons in Austin can reach this milestone within 3-6 months. Here's the roadmap.

## Where Your Strokes Are Going

Before we fix anything, we need to understand where you're losing shots. For most golfers shooting 100-115, the breakdown looks like this:

- **Penalty strokes:** 4-8 per round (OB, water, lost balls)
- **Three-putts:** 6-10 per round
- **Chunked/topped shots:** 4-8 per round
- **Poor course management:** 3-5 unnecessary strokes

Notice what's NOT on this list? Distance. You don't need to hit it farther to break 100. You need to hit it straighter, make better decisions, and avoid disasters.

## The Four Keys to Breaking 100

### 1\. Eliminate Penalty Strokes

This is the fastest way to drop your score. Every ball in the water or OB costs you at least two strokes.

**The fix:** Tee off with whatever club you can keep in play — even if it's a 7-iron. On holes with water or OB, aim away from trouble. The fairway doesn't care if you hit it with a driver or a hybrid. Stop trying to be a hero off the tee.

### 2\. Get Rid of Three-Putts

If you're three-putting 8 times per round, that's 8 strokes you can save without changing your swing at all.

**The fix:** Practice lag putting. From 30+ feet, your goal isn't to make it — it's to get it within 3 feet. We use a simple drill at BGP: putt to a towel laid on the green from various distances. If you can consistently leave the ball on the towel, three-putts disappear.

### 3\. Make Consistent Contact

Topped shots, fat shots, and whiffs add up fast. The solution isn't a swing overhaul — it's controlling your low point.

**The fix:** Practice with a focus on brushing the grass after the ball. Place a tee in the ground and practice clipping it without a ball. When you can consistently clip the tee, put a ball in front of it. Contact improves immediately.

### 4\. Play Smarter, Not Harder

Course management at the 100-level is simple: avoid big numbers. A bogey is fine. A double bogey is acceptable. A triple or worse is where rounds blow up.

**The fix:** If you're in trouble, chip out to the fairway. Don't try to thread a gap through the trees. Lay up short of water and bunkers. Take one more club than you think you need on approach shots — most misses are short.

## The Practice Plan

### Weekly Schedule (4-5 hours total)

- **1 lesson per week** (30-60 minutes with your coach)
- **2 practice sessions** (45 minutes each)
- Session 1: Putting and chipping (30 min putting, 15 min chipping)
- Session 2: Full swing with focus on contact (30 min irons, 15 min driver)
- **1 round per week** (apply what you've learned, focus on process)

### The 100-Day Challenge

We run a structured program at BGP for golfers targeting 100. Over 100 days, you'll work through:

- Putting fundamentals and lag putting
- Chipping technique and distance control
- Iron contact and consistency
- Tee shot strategy (keeping it in play)
- On-course management and decision-making

## When to Expect Results

With consistent practice and weekly lessons, most of our Austin students break 100 within 3-6 months. The key is consistency — not marathon practice sessions, but regular, focused work on the areas that matter most.

Book a golf lesson at BGP and let's build your plan to break 100.
