# Face On vs Down the Line: Why Both Camera Angles Matter

One angle shows what your body does. The other shows where the club goes. Here's why your coach needs both perspectives to diagnose your swing accurately.

Face-on and down-the-line camera angles set up to record a golf swing for analysis

## Two Windows Into One Swing

Your golf swing is a three-dimensional movement, but a phone camera captures it in two dimensions. That's why a single angle can never tell the full story. Face On and Down the Line are the two standard coaching views — and each reveals something the other can't.

Understanding what each angle shows will help you film better videos, ask better questions, and get more out of every coaching interaction.

## What Face On Reveals

The Face On angle — camera directly in front of you, perpendicular to the target line — is your coach's window into the big picture of your swing mechanics.

**What we see from this angle:**

- **Weight transfer** — Is your weight shifting into your lead side on the downswing, or are you hanging back?
- **Hip and shoulder rotation** — How much separation exists between your upper and lower body at key positions
- **Low point** — Where the club contacts the ground relative to the ball
- **Head movement** — Lateral sway or vertical dip that disrupts consistency
- **Hand path** — The direction your hands travel through the hitting zone

This is the angle that tells us about your _body_. It's where we diagnose sequencing issues, balance problems, and the physical tendencies that create your ball flight patterns.

## What Down the Line Reveals

The Down the Line angle — camera directly behind you on the target line — shows us the _club's_ story.

**What we see from this angle:**

- **Swing plane** — Is the club moving on an efficient path, or is it too steep or too flat?
- **Club face orientation** — Open, closed, or square at key checkpoints
- **Takeaway path** — Inside, outside, or on-plane in the first few feet of the backswing
- **Shaft lean at impact** — Forward lean indicates proper compression; backward lean means flipping
- **Follow-through direction** — The exit path confirms what happened through impact

This angle is essential for diagnosing path-related issues like slices, hooks, and pushes. Without it, your coach is guessing about club path based on ball flight alone.

## Why You Need Both

Here's a real example: a student sends a Down the Line video showing a perfect swing plane. Textbook. But they're slicing everything. What's happening?

The Face On view reveals the answer — they're swaying laterally away from the target, causing an open face at impact. The plane was fine. The body movement was the problem. Without both angles, that diagnosis is impossible.

Another example: Face On looks great — solid weight shift, good rotation. But the student keeps hitting pulls. Down the Line shows an over-the-top move in transition that wasn't visible from the front.

Every swing fault has a cause, and the cause doesn't always live in the same plane as the symptom. Two angles give your coach the complete picture.

## Camera Height and Hand Position

For both angles, camera height matters. Set your phone at hand height — the height of your hands when you're at address. This puts the lens in the optimal position to capture the full swing arc without distortion.

Keep your hands centered in the frame. This is especially critical for the Down the Line view, where coaches need to see the relationship between your hands and the club throughout the entire swing. If your hands drift to the edge of the frame, key positions become impossible to evaluate.

## Make It a Habit

The best students in our Virtual Academy film both angles every range session. It takes an extra two minutes, and it gives your coach a continuous stream of data to work with. Over time, you'll be able to spot your own patterns — which is when real ownership of your swing begins.
