# Breaking 70: What It Takes to Reach Elite Amateur Golf in Austin

Only 2% of golfers ever break 70. Here's what separates the scratch player from the plus-handicap — and the training approach that gets you there.

## The 2% Club

Breaking 70 is the line between very good and elite. Fewer than 2% of all golfers ever shoot in the 60s for 18 holes. If you're working toward this level, you're not just playing golf — you're training like an athlete.

I've coached several players through this barrier, and the pattern is always the same: the swing is already good. The short game is already solid. What needs to change is the _precision_ of everything — and the mental game that holds it together under pressure.

## What Changes at the Scratch Level

### Every Shot Has a Target Within a Target

At lower levels, "hit the green" is the goal. At scratch, the goal is "hit the green in the right quadrant." You're not just aiming at the fairway — you're picking a specific side based on the pin position for your approach. Everything cascades from precise target selection.

### Miss Management Becomes an Art Form

You will miss shots. The question is where and by how much. A scratch player's miss pattern should be tight enough that even their worst shots are still playable. We use launch monitor data to shrink your dispersion patterns to tour-level standards.

### Speed Matters

At this level, distance creates scoring opportunities. More distance means shorter approach shots, which means closer proximity to the hole. We integrate speed training protocols — SuperSpeed, Rypstick, or overspeed training — alongside TPI programming to add 5-10 mph of clubhead speed without sacrificing control.

### Scoring Efficiency

Breaking 70 requires converting opportunities. That means:

- Making 60%+ of putts inside 8 feet
- Getting up and down 55%+ of the time
- Hitting 65%+ of greens in regulation
- Birdieing at least 3-4 holes per round

These benchmarks aren't arbitrary — they're derived from strokes gained data at the scratch level.

## The Training Week

A player working toward breaking 70 is training 12-18 hours per week:

- **Coaching sessions:** 2-3 per week (technical, short game, putting)
- **Solo practice:** 5-7 sessions focused on specific metrics
- **Competitive rounds:** 2-3 per week (tournament or simulated competition)
- **TPI/fitness:** 4-5 sessions per week (speed, mobility, strength)
- **Mental game:** Integrated into every session plus dedicated visualization work

### The Practice Quality Standard

At this level, every practice session has a measurable objective. "I'm going to hit 50 approach shots and track my dispersion." "I'm going to putt 100 putts from 6 feet and track my make percentage." If you're not measuring, you're not practicing — you're just hitting balls.

## The Mental Game at the Elite Level

Breaking 70 is more mental than physical. The swing is already there. The question is whether you can maintain focus, manage emotions, and execute under pressure for 18 holes.

### Process Commitment

At this level, we require absolute commitment to the pre-shot routine on every single shot. No exceptions. Even on the 14th hole when you're tired. Especially on the 14th hole when you're tired.

### Bounce-Back Ability

Tour players average a birdie rate of 20%+ after making a bogey. That's the benchmark. When you make a bogey, the next hole is a birdie opportunity, not a time to spiral.

### Comfort with Scoring

This sounds strange, but many players get uncomfortable when they're playing well. They start playing defensively, trying to "protect" a good round. We train players to stay aggressive when they're under par — that's when the great rounds happen.

## The Austin Competitive Scene

Central Texas has an active mid-amateur and elite amateur scene:

- **TGA (Texas Golf Association):** State amateur championships, match play events
- **USGA qualifiers:** US Amateur, US Mid-Amateur, US Senior Amateur qualifiers are held at Austin-area courses regularly
- **Club championships:** Competitive events at Austin Country Club, Onion Creek, Barton Creek, and others
- **City Amateur:** The Austin City Championship is a premier local event

Playing a competitive schedule is essential at this level. You can't learn to perform under pressure without experiencing pressure.

## Is This Your Path?

Breaking 70 requires commitment, talent, and time. If you're a single-digit handicap with competitive aspirations, book a Total Game Analysis at BGP. We'll run comprehensive strokes gained analysis, TPI screening, and mental game evaluation to build the development plan that gets you into the 60s.
