# Brand New to Golf? Your First Steps to Learning in Austin, Texas

Never held a golf club before? Here's exactly where to start in Austin — from your first grip to your first round on the course. No experience necessary.

Beginner golfer taking a first swing lesson with an Austin golf coach

## Welcome to the Game

I teach a lot of beginners. More than you'd think. Every week, someone walks onto the range at BGP having never hit a golf ball — and most of them are nervous about it. They think they need to know something before they show up. They don't. That's what we're here for.

If you're brand new to golf and you live in Austin, you're in one of the best cities in the country to learn. Year-round weather, dozens of courses from beginner-friendly to championship level, and a golf culture that's welcoming, not intimidating. Here's how to get started.

## What Happens in Your First Golf Lesson

### The Grip

Everything starts here. How you hold the club determines everything that follows. I spend more time on grip with beginners than any other fundamental because getting it right early saves months of frustration later. We'll find the grip style that feels natural for your hands — interlocking, overlapping, or ten-finger.

### Posture and Setup

Golf posture isn't what most people expect. It's athletic — like a shortstop ready for a ground ball, not standing straight up. We work on hip hinge, knee flex, arm hang, and ball position. These details feel awkward at first but become second nature quickly.

### Making Contact

Here's the secret nobody tells beginners: we don't start with a driver. We start with a wedge or short iron and focus on making solid contact. A 30-yard pitch shot that flies straight and lands softly is more satisfying — and more useful — than a topped driver that rolls 50 yards.

### The Short Game

Most of your first lesson happens inside 50 yards. Putting, chipping, and pitching are where beginners see success fastest. There's nothing like sinking a 10-foot putt in your first hour to make you feel like a golfer.

## What Equipment Do You Need?

### For Your First Lesson: Nothing

Seriously. We have clubs you can use. Don't buy anything until you've taken a few lessons and decided golf is something you want to pursue.

### After a Few Lessons: A Starter Set

A complete starter set with bag runs $200-400 new. Brands like Callaway Strata, Top Flite, and Wilson SGI make excellent beginner sets. Used sets are even more affordable — check Play It Again Sports, Golf Galaxy's pre-owned section, or Facebook Marketplace.

### What You Don't Need Yet

- A $500 driver
- Custom-fit irons
- Tour-level golf balls (use the cheapest balls you can find — you're going to lose a lot of them)
- Golf shoes (athletic shoes are fine for the range and most courses)

## Golf Lessons in Austin: Your Options

### Private Golf Lessons

One-on-one instruction with a coach focused entirely on your development. This is the fastest way to build fundamentals. At BGP, our initial assessment is designed specifically for new golfers — we evaluate where you are, discuss your goals, and build a personalized plan.

### Group Golf Classes

Group clinics are social, affordable, and fun. You learn alongside other beginners, which removes the intimidation factor. Our group sessions cover fundamentals in a structured but relaxed format. This is a great option if you want to learn with friends or a partner.

### Golf Clinics and Events

BGP runs periodic beginner clinics that cover the essentials in a half-day format. These are perfect for someone who wants a taste of golf instruction before committing to regular lessons.

## The First Month Timeline

### Week 1-2: Range Only

You're going to spend your first couple of weeks on the driving range and practice green. Focus on grip, posture, and making solid contact with short irons. Don't rush to the course.

### Week 3-4: Short Course or Par 3

Once you're making decent contact and can get the ball airborne consistently, it's time for a short course. Austin has great options — Butler Park Pitch & Putt is perfect for beginners. Par-3 courses let you play real golf without the pressure of a full-length course.

### Month 2: Full Course (With Guidance)

By month two, most beginners are ready for their first full round. I recommend playing with an experienced golfer or your coach for the first few times. Play the forward tees, pick up after double-par on any hole, and focus on enjoying the experience rather than keeping a strict score.

## Austin Courses Perfect for Beginners

- **Butler Park Pitch & Putt:** 9-hole par-3, walking only, very affordable. The best place in Austin for first-timers.
- **Lions Municipal:** Historic, affordable, and welcoming. Great pace of play.
- **Bluebonnet Hill:** Forgiving layout with wide fairways. Excellent junior and beginner rates.
- **Grey Rock:** Beautiful Hill Country course with forward tees that make it very playable for new golfers.

## Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

### Trying to Kill the Ball

Every beginner swings too hard. Power in golf comes from technique and sequencing, not muscular effort. I tell every new student the same thing: swing at 70% and you'll hit it farther than swinging at 100%.

### Skipping the Short Game

Beginners want to hit driver. I understand. It's fun. But your scoring improvement will come from putting and chipping — that's where you'll use the most strokes. Our practice split for beginners: 60% short game, 40% full swing.

### Watching Too Many YouTube Videos

This might sound strange coming from someone who makes instructional content, but random YouTube tips will confuse a beginner more than help. Different instructors teach different methods. Pick one coach, follow one system, and build your fundamentals consistently.

### Playing Courses That Are Too Hard

Don't book a round at a championship course for your first time out. Start with beginner-friendly courses and work your way up. Nobody has fun losing 20 balls in four hours.

## Why Austin Is the Best Place to Learn Golf

Year-round weather means you can practice every month. The Austin golf community is growing fast — there are leagues, meetups, and social golf groups for every level. And the variety of courses, from municipal to Hill Country gems, means you'll never run out of places to play as you improve.

At BGP, we've built our entire program around development. Whether you want to play casually with friends, join a league, or eventually compete, we start every student at the beginning and build from there. No assumptions, no judgment, just golf.

Book your initial assessment and let's get you started.
