# Age-Appropriate Practice: How Much Should Your Junior Golfer Train?

More practice doesn't always mean faster improvement. Here's how much training is right for each age group — and why balance prevents burnout.

## The Burnout Problem Nobody Talks About

Some junior golfers are practicing too much. I've watched talented 12-year-olds burn out from 20-hour weeks. I've seen 14-year-olds develop overuse injuries from hundreds of balls daily. Early specialization leads to higher injury rates, psychological burnout, and slower long-term development.

## The Right Amount at Every Age

### Ages 5-7: 1-3 Hours Per Week

One group lesson plus casual practice. Golf should be one of several activities. Play other sports.

### Ages 8-10: 3-6 Hours Per Week

1-2 lessons, 1-2 practice sessions, one weekend round. Continue at least one other sport.

### Ages 11-13: 6-10 Hours Per Week

1-2 lessons, 3-4 practice sessions (45-60 min each), 1-2 rounds per week. Add TPI exercises.

### Ages 14-16: 10-15 Hours Per Week

2-3 lessons, 5-6 practice sessions, 1-2 competitive rounds, TPI training. Include 1-2 rest days.

### Ages 16-18: 15-20 Hours Per Week

3-4 coaching sessions, daily focused practice, 2-3 competitive rounds, TPI 4-5x/week. One rest day minimum.

## The Quality Practice Framework

### The 50/30/20 Split

- **50% short game and putting** — where scores are made
- **30% full swing** — specific technical goals
- **20% playing and competing** — games, challenges, course simulation

### Practice With a Plan

Every session needs a specific objective. We build practice plans for every junior and load them into their student dashboard.

## Warning Signs of Burnout

- Declining enthusiasm
- Persistent physical complaints
- Performance plateau despite more practice
- Emotional volatility on the course
- Social withdrawal

If you see these signs, pull back. Take a week off. Refocus on fun.

## The Multi-Sport Advantage

I strongly encourage juniors under 14 to play at least one other sport. My best junior golfers — the ones who play college golf — almost all played other sports through middle school.

Book a junior assessment at BGP and we'll design a practice plan that maximizes development without risking burnout.
